Scalawags and Carpetbaggers
Definitions-
Scalawags: a scalawag is a southerner who supported the federal reconstruction plan. Scalawag is originally a term for cattle.
Carpetbagger: a carpetbagger is a term for northerners who went South during reconstruction. The term was made because people said that these men came to the south with what could be packed into a suitcase made with carpet scraps (Hodges).

These terms were developed by people that wanted to make fun of the people that came to the South from the North. These people came to the South because they wanted to help rebuild the South after the Civil War. The south was suffering economically, socially, and politically.
The goal of the carpetbaggers was to create new buisness opportunities.
The goal of a scalawag was to help rebuild the south.
